Cloud Systems Engineer

Cloud Brigade is a cloud and IT managed Services Provider specializing in Linux and Open Source Software solutions. We are searching for a new member to join our technical services team in Santa Cruz. Our services include the following :

  • Design, deploy, monitor and maintain application platforms and/or solutions in public and private clouds
  • Provide contract maintenance, monitoring, and security for existing systems
  • Assess, recommend, cleanup, document IT infrastructure for customers
  • Provide IT process oversight and recommendations to improve customer efficiency
  • Amend existing IT teams to provide advanced consulting services

We build solutions based on existing cloud services and open source software that often out perform commercial offerings and generally with a lower total cost of ownership. We have a big picture viewpoint which enables us to architect solutions that best fit the business’s long term goals, minimize or eliminate future pitfalls and scalability issues. Some of the solutions and technologies we work with are :

  • Migration to cloud based solutions from on-premise or colo based solutions
  • Create Hybrid Clouds
  • Private cloud platforms using Xen, KVM, and VMWare virtualization
  • Scalable and Highly Available Application Platforms
  • Enterprise grade Unified Communications Systems
  • High performance hosting using Nginx, PHP-FPM, MySQL, Varnish, etc.
  • Clustered Application Platforms
  • Amazon AWS and Microsoft Azure solutions
  • ​Implementing software applications on top of any combination of the above

All work is performed from our office in downtown Santa Cruz. We’ve been fortunate enough to have built a very special team here in Santa Cruz, and it’s going to require someone equally as special to fill this position.

Here’s what we are looking for. You are passionate about technology and like to be challenged. You exercise grace under pressure and can problem solve efficiently. You enjoy working with a team of like minded individuals. You can fix anything even if you’ve never seen it before (Think MacGyver). You’re familiar with PC server hardware, current cloud solutions like Amazon AWS and Google Apps and have experience selecting optimal configurations based on the task the server will perform. You want to have a job that provides never ending opportunity to work with new technologies. You are good with prioritizing customer needs as well as your own time. You have a sense of humor. You’ve worked with many of the above technologies.

Here are some of the job duties you might fill in this position :

  • Work with customers to assess needs and define project requirements
  • Assist sales staff estimate job costs for proposals
  • Architect solutions based on project requirements
  • Maintain company servers and software applications
  • Escalation point for critical customer issues
  • Mentoring of team members to increase their capabilities
  • Quality control and testing of customer deployments
  • Write and review documentation
  • Act as an individual contributor handling trouble tickets
  • On Call rotation to respond to emergency pages
  • Write various scripts for system management

Desired technical experience and soft skills :

3 years experience with Linux System Administration (RedHat/CentOS preferred, Ubuntu a bonus)

  • LAMP stack
  • DNS and Mail administration
  • Server Virtualization (VMWare, Xen, KVM)
  • Cloud Services (AWS, RackSpace, Azure)
  • Shell scripting in at least one language (Perl, Python, PHP)
  • Configuration Management Software (Puppet, Chef, Ansible, SaltStack)
  • Server monitoring systems (Nagios, GWOS, DataDog)
  • Log Management such as Splunk and SumoLogic
  • Network analysis (Wireshark, tcpdump)
  • Asterisk VoIP stack
  • Helpdesk software
  • Great communication and writing skills
  • Ability to mentor and provide leadership

This is onsite position in Santa Cruz, CA with normal business hours of 9am – 6pm Monday through Friday. There may be an occasional need for after hours or weekend maintenance work. Cloud Brigade provides paid time off, and a shared expense medical benefits plan. Compensation is commensurate with experience.
